SSCS Policies, Procedures
and Information for Summer School 2007
Summer School
Dates
Summer
school will begin Tuesday, May 29, 2007 and end Tuesday, July 10, 2007, for a
total of six (6) weeks (30 school days). Note: the regular school year ends Thursday,
May 24, 2007. Also, no school Wednesday, July 4th (Independence Day).
Summer School
Designation
This
year, summer school will be referred to as Summer School '07. Current education
code states, "a student shall be considered to be enrolled in a grade immediately
upon completion of the preceding grade." For example, a student who
completes 6th grade on May 24th, 2007, shall be considered to be enrolled in
7th grade if enrolling in summer school. (Note: 8th graders become 9th graders,
but if they are doing remedial work, e.g. finishing up 8th grade work, then
they do NOT receive high school credit. If they have completed their 8th grade
work and are doing high school level work, then they earn credits in summer
school.)
Summer School
Qualifications
Summer
school is offered for students in grades 7-12 whose test scores or whose daily
work, in the professional judgment of the ES, indicate inadequate preparation
for the CAHSEE. A summer school student must also be
enrolled for Fall 2008, unless they expect to graduate after summer school.
Summer School is designed primarily to improve student performance
in the core areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Therefore, summer
school students must enroll in these core courses/growth areas. Students whose
test scores so warrant, may enroll in courses other than reading, writing, and
mathematics (see “Qualifying Programs” below), but such enrollment is extremely
limited.
If enrolling, 7th – 8th graders must enroll
for two classes (aka growth areas). Students taking high school courses must
attempt exactly 10 credits.

(NOTE:
all references to a student’s STAR or CAHSEE results are for the most recent
available scores. In the event that no STAR or CAHSEE results are available,
then SCANTRON results may be used to determine a student’s proper placement in
the summer school program(s))
#1) Grades 7-12:
Students
who do not demonstrate sufficient progress toward passing the California High
School Exit Examination (CAHSEE). Sufficient progress shall be determined on
the basis of either of the following:

Summer School Responsibilities
by Regular year ES
The
regular school year ES is responsible for creating a high school summer school
report card in ES Webfiles. Be sure to select
semester SS, and the courses/growth areas that the student needs to take in
summer school (see B). Also include the number of credits the student is
attempting for each course. Do not add the marks at this time--the summer school
ES will complete the marks at the end of summer school (the summer school ES may
also adjust the number of credits, as appropriate).
There
is no Instructional Funding for summer school, therefore the regular year ES
must order any additional materials needed for summer school with regular year
funding and provide to their summer school students at the last meeting of the
school year.
Summer School
Student Load
ES
student load limit for summer school is 25. ESs may serve their own regular
students for summer school if they wish to work for summer school. Students of
those regular year ESs who do not wish to serve in summer school will be placed
with other summer school ESs by seniority.
Summer School
Student Assignments
The
Summer School
Meeting Requirements
Summer
school ESs meet face to face with each student/parent a minimum of one hour
every 5 school days. Students must meet with their summer school ES on a weekly
basis, and turn in all work completed.
This work will form their summer school portfolio. (Learning records are not completed
during summer school.).
Summer School
Work Requirements
Students
must average 4+ hours of summer school per day. At the end of the summer, a summer
school portfolio containing all work
completed each day must be submitted for each student. This portfolio must
justify 4 or more hours of summer school per day (average). If a student is not
meeting this 4+ hour requirement, the ES must attempt to remedy this deficiency
immediately. In cases where the ES's intervention is not heeded, the student
must be dropped within 5 school days.
Summer School
ES Application and Employment
Email
NOTE: Each Summer School ES must be cleared for checkout for the ’07
regular school year by his/her advisor by June 1.
Failure by a summer school ES to be cleared for checkout by June 1 may result
in dismissal from summer school duties and transfer of his/her summer students
to other summer school ESs.
Summer School
ES Training
Wednesday,
April 25th,
ESs
should NOT email Rolff (see L) indicating their interest in summer
school unless they will attend the inservice.
Summer School
ES Pay
ESs
will be paid $25 per hour for 6 hours of instruction (one hour of instruction
is based on one full week of student attendance) and 2 hours of prep time (this
includes attendance at the Summer School ES inservice – see O below) for a
total of $200 per student served completing the entire 6 weeks (at 4+ hours per
day). No prep time will be paid to ESs for students not completing the entire
six weeks.

Duties
Some
of the duties considered to fall under the 2 hours of prep time include,
but may not be limited to:
Summer School
Student Agreements (Done by Summer School ES)
New
Student Agreements (SA) must be completed for summer school. It is the
responsibility of the student’s summer school ES to complete and sign the SA
with their students. When assigned a summer school student by the office, the
summer school ES must meet with the student prior to beginning summer school,
remembering that enrollment is first come/first serve, therefore the earlier
the SA is submitted, the more chance of getting a summer school space.
