SSCS Policies, Procedures and Information for Summer School 2007

Summer School Dates

Summer school will begin Tuesday, May 29, 2007 and end Tuesday, July 10, 2007, for a total of six (6) weeks (30 school days). Note: the regular school year ends Thursday, May 24, 2007. Also, no school Wednesday, July 4th (Independence Day).

Summer School Designation

This year, summer school will be referred to as Summer School '07. Current education code states, "a student shall be considered to be enrolled in a grade immediately upon completion of the preceding grade." For example, a student who completes 6th grade on May 24th, 2007, shall be considered to be enrolled in 7th grade if enrolling in summer school. (Note: 8th graders become 9th graders, but if they are doing remedial work, e.g. finishing up 8th grade work, then they do NOT receive high school credit. If they have completed their 8th grade work and are doing high school level work, then they earn credits in summer school.)

Summer School Qualifications

Summer school is offered for students in grades 7-12 whose test scores or whose daily work, in the professional judgment of the ES, indicate inadequate preparation for the CAHSEE. A summer school student must also be enrolled for Fall 2008, unless they expect to graduate after summer school.

Summer School is designed primarily to improve student performance in the core areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Therefore, summer school students must enroll in these core courses/growth areas. Students whose test scores so warrant, may enroll in courses other than reading, writing, and mathematics (see “Qualifying Programs” below), but such enrollment is extremely limited.

Summer School Course Limits

If enrolling, 7th – 8th graders must enroll for two classes (aka growth areas). Students taking high school courses must attempt exactly 10 credits.

Qualifying Programs:

(NOTE: all references to a student’s STAR or CAHSEE results are for the most recent available scores. In the event that no STAR or CAHSEE results are available, then SCANTRON results may be used to determine a student’s proper placement in the summer school program(s))

#1) Grades 7-12:

Students who do not demonstrate sufficient progress toward passing the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE). Sufficient progress shall be determined on the basis of either of the following:

  • Results of the CAHSEE.
  • The pupils’ grades and other indicators of academic achievement (e.g. STAR or Scantron).
  • Students with math or language arts STAR results of “basic”, “below basic”, or “far below basic” should be enrolled in this program. Students enrolled in this program may take math and/or language arts courses.

#2) Grades 1-12:

This program is available to the first 10% of students who enroll. Enrollment in this program is limited to students who have passed CAHSEE (for 10th – 12th), or who have STAR scores of proficient or above (for 7th – 9th)

Students enrolling in this summer school program may take courses in the following areas:

Grades 7-12

English
Mathematics
Social sciences
Science
Foreign languages
Visual & performing arts
Career technical education
Applied arts
Physical education
Automobile driver education

Summer School Responsibilities by Regular year ES

Regular School Year ESs should tell their qualifying students about summer school. If any of their students are interested, the ES should help the family fill out the SSCS Summer School Request Form (one form per family) (janet - please link new form) and send it to the address indicated on the form. The Summer School Request form must be received by the office by May 7th. Upon receipt of the Summer School Request Form, student assignments will assign a student to a summer school ES and notify the regular school year ES of the assignment. Assignments will be made on a first come/first serve basis until summer school is full. Then the student will go onto a waiting list for a space if someone drops out.

The regular school year ES is responsible for creating a high school summer school report card in ES Webfiles. Be sure to select semester SS, and the courses/growth areas that the student needs to take in summer school (see B). Also include the number of credits the student is attempting for each course. Do not add the marks at this time--the summer school ES will complete the marks at the end of summer school (the summer school ES may also adjust the number of credits, as appropriate).

There is no Instructional Funding for summer school, therefore the regular year ES must order any additional materials needed for summer school with regular year funding and provide to their summer school students at the last meeting of the school year.

Summer School Student Load

ES student load limit for summer school is 25. ESs may serve their own regular students for summer school if they wish to work for summer school. Students of those regular year ESs who do not wish to serve in summer school will be placed with other summer school ESs by seniority.

Summer School Student Assignments

The Placerville office will assign students to a summer school ES. When assigned a summer school student, the summer school ES must meet with the student to complete the Student Agreement (SA) prior to starting summer school. Remember, spaces are filled on a first come/first serve basis.

Summer School Meeting Requirements

Summer school ESs meet face to face with each student/parent a minimum of one hour every 5 school days. Students must meet with their summer school ES on a weekly basis, and turn in all work completed. This work will form their summer school portfolio. (Learning records are not completed during summer school.).

Summer School Work Requirements

Students must average 4+ hours of summer school per day. At the end of the summer, a summer school portfolio containing all work completed each day must be submitted for each student. This portfolio must justify 4 or more hours of summer school per day (average). If a student is not meeting this 4+ hour requirement, the ES must attempt to remedy this deficiency immediately. In cases where the ES's intervention is not heeded, the student must be dropped within 5 school days.

Summer School ES Application and Employment

Email Rolff Christensen (trolff@ieminc.org ) with a CC to Janet Marsh (jmarsh@ieminc.org) by Friday, March 30th, if you are interested in serving as an ES for summer school AND you will attend the inservice session (see K). Summer school employment is contingent upon approval by school administration. In your email state that you are interested in being a summer school ES; also include your name, email address, phone number(s), desired student load, and that you will attend the inservice on April 25th. The subject line of the email should read: “SSCS ES interested in summer school – (your name).” You will be notified by Friday, April 13th, of your summer school employment status. If you are selected for summer school employment, every effort will be made to meet your student load request. However, no guarantees can be made.

NOTE: Each Summer School ES must be cleared for checkout for the ’07 regular school year by his/her advisor by June 1. Failure by a summer school ES to be cleared for checkout by June 1 may result in dismissal from summer school duties and transfer of his/her summer students to other summer school ESs.

Summer School ES Training

Wednesday, April 25th, Rolff Christensen will conduct a mandatory summer school inservice to train all summer school ESs in summer school policies and procedures.

  • SSCS: The training will be held (need location here) from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
  • OGCS: The training will be online on (date and time)

ESs should NOT email Rolff (see L) indicating their interest in summer school unless they will attend the inservice.

Summer School ES Pay

ESs will be paid $25 per hour for 6 hours of instruction (one hour of instruction is based on one full week of student attendance) and 2 hours of prep time (this includes attendance at the Summer School ES inservice – see O below) for a total of $200 per student served completing the entire 6 weeks (at 4+ hours per day). No prep time will be paid to ESs for students not completing the entire six weeks.

Example: Flake E. Studyer (student's name) attends only 14 days of summer school, then drops. I. M. Bummed (Flake's ES) would receive $50.00 for Flake's attendance based on the fact that 14 days of enrollment = only two FULL weeks of attendance (no prep time would be paid).

ES Prep Time Duties

Some of the duties considered to fall under the 2 hours of prep time include, but may not be limited to:

  • attendance at summer school training session
  • collection of all student work and assembly of work into a portfolio (expenses for copying, envelopes, etc. are the responsibility of the ES, who may use regular year stipend pay for this)
  • attendance keeping on forms provided at the summer school inservice
  • additional communications with students/parents/summer school coordinator
  • submission of attendance, portfolios, timesheet, final report card
  • setting appointments with students/parents

Summer School Student Agreements (Done by Summer School ES)

New Student Agreements (SA) must be completed for summer school. It is the responsibility of the student’s summer school ES to complete and sign the SA with their students. When assigned a summer school student by the office, the summer school ES must meet with the student prior to beginning summer school, remembering that enrollment is first come/first serve, therefore the earlier the SA is submitted, the more chance of getting a summer school space.
