REVISED 6/2010

K-8 Grade Placement Policy

(Please note, this is for grade K-8 students only. For grades 9-12, go to

High School Grade Placement Policy

For K-8 students, at the time of enrollment, the grade level is written on the student agreement. The level can be determined by the legal need to be 5 by December 2nd for Kindergarten, and proceeding up each grade from there. For 2011 Grade Placement, refer to the linked chart. Students can be placed "at grade level" or below grade level at teacher/parent discretion, but never above grade level.

If a student comes to us from a private or public school, and is at a grade level above or below the level indicated on the grade placement chart, the studen must be placed at the sequential level, as indicated by the previous school. Any deviations must be approved by the Executive Director.

A student can work in curriculum at higher grade levels that match their ability, but the grade level in our records must not go above the level determined by their age.

Students in grades 1-8 are not generally retained since our students can work at their own pace. Eses should not retain any students without approval from their advisor and executive director.

If a teacher/parent decides that a student should repeat a grade level, contact your ES Advisor for approval prior to submitting the Student Agreement.

Kindergarten Retention: If your student needs to repeat Kindergarten, contact your Advisor. They will direct you to have the parent sign this form linked to the cde website and mail it to the IEM office in Placerville attn: student records when you submit the student agreement for the Fall. It is an auditable document. They can only repeat Kindergarten once. (The form asks for "Kindergarten Anniversary" date, it is the last date of their first year of kindergarten). The name to put on the form is the executive director for CWCS. Kindergarten Retention requests are not automatic and must be approved by the Executive Director.
