Meeting
a-g Requirements in Math and Foreign Language
(A strategy to
help your a-g students save time and money)
Here’s
a strategy for saving time and money when trying to help students meet a-g
college entrance requirements for UC/CSU.
Students can take higher level courses in math and foreign language to
validate their a-g Subject requirements.
This means that students could take the lower level courses as
“general”, then take the higher level a-g course to
validate the entire math and/or foreign language subject requirement. This strategy can only be used for math and
foreign language.
Math
A grade of C or better in a-g Algebra 2
validates Algebra 1. A grade of C or
better in a-g Trig/PreCal validates the entire high
school college prep requirement. A grade
of C or better in a-g Statistics will validate only Algebra 1 and Algebra 2,
not Geometry. A UC/CSU transferrable
college course would also validate the lower level courses, ie,
MJC’s MATH 122 PreCalculus
validates the entire high school college prep requirement.
Foreign Language=Language Other Than English (LOTE)
A grade of C
or better validates a lower level course.
A higher level LOTE course can validate the appropriate number of years
based on the level. Example: a-g Spanish
3 validates 3 years of LOTE. A college
course can validate a high school LOTE course (the level of validation depends
on the college course prerequisite and description, please check with the
Guidance Department for more details).
