MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM, Grades K-5

TRADITIONAL TEXTBOOKS
These curricula are the California state-adopted, standards-aligned programs. They are the easiest way to insure that your child is covering the state standards for their grade level. These curricula have components that address the needs of children with visual, auditory, and often kinesthetic learning styles.

HOMESCHOOL FAVORITES
These curricula are often written by subject or needs-specific publishers, single item publishers, or by homeschooling families who know the needs of homeschoolers. The curricula are typically not aligned to the California state standards. They tend to be homeschool user-friendly in that more of the content is in the student edition and less in the teacher edition, there may be fewer teacher manuals, and tests with answer keys are often included in the curriculum package, not in a separate, teacher resource book.

Singapore Math (U.S. Edition)
(Rainbow Resource Center used to carry the original Singapore math program, but has changed to the U.S. Edition. Singapore math CD-ROMs model the thinking that should be used when solving problems in the course books and are recommended).

Saxon Math (Homeschool)
(This is a tried-and-true, user-friendly homeschool math program favorite. Use of manipulatives is not over-done. There are daily math fact drill worksheets and math facts flashcards to accompany the lessons. Manipulatives are not sold through Saxon Homeschool, but are sold separately--see Rainbow Resource Center/Saxon Math Manipulatives).
The following Saxon math sequence aligns more closely to the CA standards:
Pre K - Use Saxon Math K
(Saxon Math K requires little, if any writing, which is why in California Math K is considered a Pre-K curriculum).
K - Use Saxon Math 1
(Saxon Math 1 has beginning math concepts with writing).
1 - Use Saxon Math 2
2 - Use Saxon Math 3
3 - Use Saxon Math 5/4
4 - Use Saxon Math 6/5
5 - Use Saxon Math 7/6

Math U See
(A great program for students who need to experience math concepts concretely using manipulatives each step of the way in order to learn them. This new series is less integrated than the old series, and it does not align well with the CA standards. Math U See is meant to be used as a stand-alone program, but it can also be used as a great "hands-on" supplement to any math program).
The elementary schedule looks like this:
K-Primer (introduce math)
1-Alpha (single digit addition and subtraction and other topics)
2-Beta (multiple digit addition and subtraction and other topics)
3-Gamma (single and multiple-digit multiplication and other topics
4-Delta (single and multiple-digit division and other topics)
5-Epsilon (fractions and other topics)

4 - Pre-Calculus Teaching Textbooks
(Popular homeschool math program because of the student's ability to work independently and receive immediate math tutoring. Students watch the program, complete the problems, then with the click of their mouse, watch a tutorial on the problems they missed. Very effective! Teaching Textbook math programs are not aligned to the California state standards and not all concepts found in a California edition textbook are in the Teaching Textbook programs. Students who struggle in math often like and do well with this program. Each course components include a textbook and CD-ROM, so students must have a computer. On-demand tutor makes this program popular among students that struggle with math).

HANDS-ON
Most programs today have a hands-on component to them. Items in this column are here because they have a "more than most" emphasis on being hands-on, which helps our kinesthetic learners. These materials are also often "homeschool favorites" because a hands-on emphasis engages and improves learning for most students.
