| K - 12 | Give your student the "big picture" overview of history by making your own timeline. Use a 9 x 12 piece of construction paper as a frame for each time period shown in "bold" below. Write the title in bold at the top of each frame. Put one picture in the middle of the frame to represent that time period. Write the "time" shown in parenthesis at the bottom of the frame. Put the frames side by side in time order from left to right. Examples of pictures: A geographical outline map of the middle east with the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers for "Early Civilizations" with a picture of a pyramid or a tablet with cuneiform writing; a picture of Julius Caesar for Roman Empire; a picture of a castle, knight, or coat of arms for Medieval Period; a picture of Columbus for the Age of Exploration; a picture of a log cabin for colonization; a picture of George Washington for American Independence; a picture of a covered wagon for Westward expansion, a picture of a factory building for Modern Times. If you want you can put a second "frame" right below the "chunky" frame listing the subcategories of the time period (the ones not bolded). Less is better with this type of timeline. This is to give students the "big picture". You can use other timelines with all of the details.
