Sing, Spell, Read, and Write
A homeschool favorite. Especially good for PreK - Kindergarten with its "ferris wheel" and songs to teach beginning sounds and blending. Spelling words are grouped into lists by the same sound (phoneme). Readers reinforce the spelling word lists through stories that emphasize the phoneme. I recommend the readers as a supplement to any reading program. While grammar and writing opportunities are provided, you will want to supplement those areas of this curriculum.

SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words)
John Shefflebine's very research-based reading skills program. This program will definitely give your child a strong and solid reading foundation in phonics, phonemic awareness, sight words, and multi-syllable reading instruction, and more. At one time a state adopted supplemental reading program. Scripted daily lessons use a combination of teacher-led whiteboard activities, beginning readers, and word and sound card drills depending upon the level. Placement tests determine starting level and starting level lesson. Includes supplemental fluency, spelling, and comprehension. Must be used in combination with other resources for a complete reading program. Ask your ES about the Routines and Sounds CD-ROM lets you see how to teach the drills.

K - 6 Writing Road to Reading
A homeschool favorite that is difficult to use without a little training. Many find the sequencing of instruction confusing, but the newer edition has addressed many of those issues. Based on the Orton-Gillingham research and Spalding methods, this program uses multi-sensory, phonics-based techniques to teach reading, spelling, and handwriting...all at the same time. The see it, hear it, say it, write it while saying it, and marking it techniques greatly increases retention. The one-stroke handwriting method is designed to prevent reversals in children who have dyslexic tendencies. It produces well constructed letter formation and an easy transition to cursive.

K - 6 The Writing and Spelling Road to Reading and Thinking (The Riggs Institute)
Based on the Orton-Gillingham and Spalding methods of reading/spelling/handwriting. User-friendly scripted lessons. They have the most complete set of phonogram cards with the spelling rules on the back that can be used with any of the Orton-Gillingham and Spaulding programs. If you are using the one-stroke method of handwriting, their wall-chart is a must! They also make a 12" vinyl ruler with the phonograms and the upper and lower case letters on it...also recommended. The phonogram cards, one-stroke wall-chart, and vinyl ruler would complement any program using the Orton-Gillingham research and Spalding methods.
