REVISED 8/2008

Using DATA to Drive and Improve Instruction

One of the tasks recommended by WASC is to “disaggregate local and state assessment data to improve instructional practices.”

Why has data become so important?

Since NCLB, school districts are seeking ways to improve student achievement and test scores.

The STAR data is used by the state to determine whether or not our students are making adequate progress towards becoming proficient.  Our 10th grade CAHSEE passing scores are also used to measure the success of our school. It’s unfortunate but true that the future existence of our school may be linked to our STAR data.

How do we disaggregate our data?

When we disaggregate data, we look at the data from different angles such as: grade level, teacher, student, and program or curriculum.  Edusoft can be used to look at longitudinal data to observe how student(s) do over time.

Our charter states:

Objectives of the charter school include, but shall not be limited to the following:

*CWCS students will perform and achieve better than their previous year’s state assessment scores when available.

*Students will be intrinsically self-motivated, competent, life-long learners.

*Students will achieve competency in basic academic skills.

*Curricula and materials shall adhere to the California State Frameworks and Content Standards in accordance with the California Public Schools Accountability Act.

*Students will demonstrate proficiency in STAR-specific assessments.

We need to look at the data in order to discover whether or not we are meeting the objectives of our charter.

Since our program is individualized we need to look at individual data.

TASK 1A is to be completed with all of your students. Task 1B is to be completed for those students requiring a PLIP.

1A:

Each ES will review and explain the current Scantron results, the previous year’s report data for STAR/CST (look at both front and back of report), and/or CAHSEE (for students who did not pass) with each parent for each student.

1B:

*The ES and Parent will focus on 1-2 goals to improve on this school year in the subjects of English and/or Math using the PLIP Checklist.

*The ES and parent will decide on a strategy to achieve each goal

*The ES will write the goals and plan to achieve each goal on the PLIP document and in the learning record under the student’s PLIP.
