Reading / Language Arts

READING

Students use their knowledge of word origins and word relationships, as well as historical and literary context clues, to determine the meaning of specialized vocabulary and to understand the precise meaning of grade-level-appropriate words.

  • analyze idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes to infer the literal and figurative meanings of phrases
  • understand the most important points in the history of English language and use common word origins to determine the historical influences on English word meanings
  • use word meanings within the appropriate context and show ability to verify those meanings by definition, restatement, example, comparison, or contrast

Students read and understand grade-level-appropriate material, including a good representation of narrative and expository text.  (Focus on Informational Text)

  • compare and contrast the features and elements of consumer materials to gain meaning from documents
  • analyze text that uses proposition and support patterns
  • find similarities and differences between texts in the treatment, scope, or organization of ideas
  • compare the original text to a summary to determine whether the summary accurately captures the main ideas, includes critical details, and conveys the underlying meaning
  • understand and explain the use of a complex mechanical device by following technical directions
  • use information from a variety of consumer, workplace, and public documents to explain a situation or decision and to solve a problem
  • evaluate the unity, coherence, logic, internal consistency, and structural patterns of text

Students read and respond to historically or culturally significant works of literature.

  • determine and articulate the relationship among the purposes and characteristics of different forms of poetry (e.g., ballad, lyric, couplet, epic, elegy, ode, sonnet)
  • evaluate the structural elements of the plot (e.g., subplots, parallel episodes, climax), the plot’s development, and the way in which conflicts are (or are not) addressed and resolved
  • compare and contrast motivations and reactions of literary characters from different historical eras confronting similar situations or conflicts
  • analyze the relevance of the setting (e.g., place, time, customs) to the mood, tone, and meaning of the text
  • identify significant literary devices (e.g., metaphor, symbolism, dialect, irony) that define a writer’s style and use those elements to interpret the work
  • analyze a work of literature, showing how it reflects the heritage, traditions, attitudes, and beliefs of its author

WRITTEN & ORAL ENGLISH LANGAUAGE CONVENTIONS

Students write and speak with a command of standard English conventions.

  • use subordination, coordination, apposition, and other devices to indicate clearly the relationship between ideas
  • edit written manuscripts to ensure that correct grammar is used
  • use correct punctuation and capitalization
  • use correct spelling conventions

WRITING

Students write clear, coherent, and focused essays.

  • consider the audience and purpose
  • create compositions that establish a controlling impression, have a coherent thesis, and end with a clear and well-supported conclusion
  • establish coherence within and among paragraphs through effective transitions, parallel structures, and similar writing techniques
  • support theses or conclusions with analogies, paraphrases, quotations, opinions from authorities, comparisons, and similar devices
  • revise writing for word choice; appropriate organization; consistent point of view; and transitions between paragraphs, passages, and ideas

Students write compositions that describe and explain familiar objects, events, and experiences.  Genres include:

  • Biographies, autobiographies or narratives
  • Responses to literature
  • Research reports
  • Persuasive compositions
  • Business letters and technical documents

Algebra

Algebra

  • Students understand and use such operations as taking the opposite, finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a fractional power. They understand and use the rules of exponents.
  • Students simplify expressions prior to solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable, such as 3(2x-5) + 4(x-2) = 12.
  • Students solve multistep problems, including word   problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step.
  • Students graph a linear equation and compute the x- and           y- intercepts (e.g., graph 2x + 6y = 4). They are also able to sketch the region defined by linear inequality (e.g., they          sketch the region defined by 2x + 6y < 4).
  • Students verify that a point lies on a line, given an equation of the line. Students are able to derive linear equations using the point-slope formula.
  • Students solve a system of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and are able to interpret the answer graphically. Students are able to solve a system of two linear inequalities in two variables and to sketch the solution sets.
  • Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide monomials and polynomials. Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, by using these techniques.
  • Students simplify fractions with polynomials in the numerator and denominator by factoring both and reducing them to the lowest terms.
  • Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions and functions. Students solve both computationally and conceptually challenging problems by using these techniques.
  • Students solve a quadratic equation by factoring or           completing the square.
  • Students apply algebraic techniques to solve rate problems, work problems, and percent mixture problems.
  • Students know the quadratic formula and are familiar with its proof by completing the square.
  • Students use the quadratic formula to find the roots of a second-degree polynomial and to solve quadratic equations.
  • Students graph quadratic functions and know that their roots are the x-intercepts.
  • Students apply quadratic equations to physical problems,          such as the motion of an object under the force of gravity.

History ~ United States History and Geography: Growth and Conflict

Students in grade eight study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution up to World War I, with an emphasis on America's role in the war. After reviewing the development of America's democratic institutions founded on the Judeo-Christian heritage and English parliamentary traditions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. They make connections between the rise of industrialization and contemporary social and economic conditions.
