Reading / Language Arts

READING

Students use their knowledge of word origins and word relationships, as well as historical and literary context clues, to determine the meaning of specialized vocabulary and to understand the precise meaning of grade-level-appropriate words.

  • identify idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes in prose and poetry
  • use knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes to understand content-area vocabulary
  • clarify word meanings through the use of definition, example, restatement, or contrast

Students read and understand grade-level-appropriate material, including a good representation of narrative and expository text.  (Focus on Informational Text)

  • understand and analyze the differences in structure and purpose between various categories of informational materials
  • locate information by using a variety of consumer, workplace, and public documents
  • identify and trace the development of an author’s argument, point of view, or perspective in text
  • understand and explain the use of a simple mechanical device by following technical directions
  • assess the adequacy, accuracy, and appropriateness of the author’s evidence to support claims and assertions, noting instances of bias and stereotyping

Students read and respond to historically or culturally significant works of literature.

  • identify events that advance the plot, and determine how each event explains past or present action(s) or foreshadows future action(s)
  • analyze characterization as delineated through a character’s thoughts, words, speech patterns, and actions; the narrator’s description; and the thoughts, words, and actions of other characters
  • identify and analyze recurring themes across works
  • contrast points of view (e.g., first and third person, limited and omniscient, subjective and objective) in narrative text and explain how they affect the overall theme of the work
  • analyze a range of responses to a literary work and determine the extent to which the literary elements in the work shaped those responses

WRITTEN & ORAL ENGLISH LANGAUAGE CONVENTIONS

Students write and speak with a command of standard English conventions.

  • identify all parts of speech and types and structure of sentences
  • demonstrate the mechanics of writing (e.g., quotation marks, commas at end of dependent clauses) and appropriate English usage (e.g., pronoun reference)
  • use correct capitalization
  • spell derivatives correctly by applying the spellings of bases and affixes

WRITING

Students write clear, coherent, and focused essays.

  • consider the audience and purpose
  • create an organizational structure that balances all aspects of the composition and uses effective transitions between sentences to unify important ideas
  • support all statements and claims with anecdotes, descriptions, facts and statistics, and specific examples
  • use strategies of note-taking, outlining, and summarizing to impose structure on composition drafts
  • identify topics; ask and evaluate questions; and develop ideas leading to inquiry, investigation, and research
  • give credit for both quoted and paraphrased information in a bibliography by using a consistent and sanctioned format and methodology for citations
  • revise writing to improve organization and word choice after checking the logic of the ideas and the precision of the vocabulary

Students write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive texts of at least 500 to 700 words in each genre.  Genres include::

  • narratives
  • responses to literature
  • a research report
  • persuasive compositions
  • summaries.

Math

Number Sense

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers (integers, fractions, and terminating decimals) and take positive rational numbers to whole-number powers.
  • Solve problems that involve discounts, markups, commissions, and profit and compute simple and compound interest.
  • Multiply, divide, and simplify rational numbers by using exponent rules.
  • Understand the meaning of the absolute value of a   number; interpret the absolute value as the distance of the number from zero on a number line; and determine the absolute value of real numbers.

Algebra & Functions

  • Simplify numerical expressions by applying properties of rational numbers (e.g., identity, inverse, distributive, associative, commutative) and justify the process used.
  • Graph linear functions, noting that the vertical change (change in y-value) per unit of horizontal change (change in x-value) is always the same and know that the ratio (“rise over run”) is called the slope of a graph.
  • Plot the values of quantities whose ratios are always the      same (e.g., cost to the number of an item, feet to inches, circumference to diameter of a circle). Fit a line to the plot and understand that the slope of the line equals the quantities.
  • Solve two-step linear equations and inequalities in one variable over the rational numbers, interpret the solution or solutions in the context from which they arose, and verify the reasonableness of the results.
  • Solve multistep problems involving rate, average speed, distance, and time or a direct variation.

Measurement & Geometry

  • Use measures expressed as rates (e.g., speed, density) and measures expressed as products (e.g., person-days)      to solve problems; check the units of the solutions; and use dimensional analysis to check the reasonableness of the answer.
  • Know and understand the Pythagorean theorem and its converse and use it to find the length of the missing side of a right triangle and the lengths of other line segments and, in some situations, empirically verify the Pythagorean theorem by direct measurement.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of conditions that indicate two geometrical figures are congruent and what congruence means about the relationships between the sides and angles of the two figures.

Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability

  • Understand the meaning of, and be able to compute, the minimum, the lower quartile, the median, the upper quartile, and the maximum of a data set.

Mathematical Reasoning

  • Students make decisions about how to approach problems
  • Students use strategies, skills, and concepts in finding solutions

Science ~ Focus on Life Science

Cell Biology

     1.  All living organisms are composed of cells, from just one to many trillions, whose details usually are visible

          only through a microscope.

Genetics

          2.  A typical cell of any organism contains genetic instructions that specify its traits. Those traits may be

               modified by environmental influences.

Evolution

          3.  Biological evolution accounts for the diversity of species developed through gradual processes over many

               generations.

Earth and Life History (Earth Sciences)

          4.  Evidence from rocks allows us to understand the evolution of life on Earth.

Structure and Function in Living Systems

          5.  The anatomy and physiology of plants and animals illustrate the complementary nature of structure and

               function.

Physical Principles in Living Systems (Physical Sciences)

          6.  Physical principles underlie biological structures and functions.

Investigation and Experimentation

    7.  Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations; students

should develop their own questions and perform investigations.

History ~ World History and Geography: Medieval and Early Modern Times

Students in grade seven study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia in the years A. D. 500Ð 1789. After reviewing the ancient world and the ways in which archaeologists and historians uncover the past, students study the history and geography of great civilizations that were developing concurrently throughout the world during medieval and early modern times. They examine the growing economic interaction among civilizations as well as the exchange of ideas, beliefs, technologies, and commodities. They learn about the resulting growth of Enlightenment philosophy and the new examination of the concepts of reason and authority, the natural rights of human beings and the divine right of kings, experimentalism in science, and the dogma of belief. Finally, students assess the political forces let loose by the Enlightenment, particularly the rise of democratic ideas, and they learn about the continuing influence of these ideas in the world today.
