CAHSEE Intensive
Updated 12/21/11
Who must participate:
- All 10th graders who score Far
Below Basic or Below Basic on their 9th grade STAR for math (general or
algebra) or English-Language Arts.
- 11th graders who have not
passed either section of the CAHSEE are not required to participate in an
intensive option. However, they must enroll in eKnowledge and complete
either the online or paper/pencil version of the Diagnostic Test, and have
a CAHSEE PLIP, which could include tutoring, enrollment in courses and/or
independent work using test prep materials such as Measuring Up or online
test prep such as Study Island.
- All 12th graders who have not
passed either section of the CAHSEE
What is the CAHSEE
Intensive:
The CAHSEE Intensive is
an intervention program set up to help all CWCS students pass the CAHSEE so
they can earn their diploma. Earning the diploma is the first priority in a
student's educational endeavors, and therefore will take precedence over other
elective activities when planning the Instructional Funds budget. The CAHSEE
Intensive programs can be expensive, and the parent/student must keep this in
mind when making requests for other activities. Students who meet the above
guidelines must do the following:
- Measuring
Up eKnowledge ~ All Students
- Enroll in grade level specific
CAHSEE eKnowledge ELA and /or Math GEA in the fall.
- Students will receive the
Early Level Measuring Up text for the needed subject and have online
access to take their Diagnostic Tests. Students without
internet will take the paper/pencil version and their ES will enter their
test answers under the student log in for a completed score and Prescriptive
Path result.
- Students will be entered into
eKnowledge online system; student log-in and directions will be sent to
ES who must share with their student.
- Complete Diagnostic Tests by
due dates (online or paper/pencil).
- 10th grade
students who score proficient on Test 2, will not have
to enroll in an approved CAHSEE Intensive class or tutor for the spring
semester. 10th graders who do not take
Diagnostic Test 2, or who do not score proficient, will have to enroll
in an approved CAHSEE Intensive class or tutoring for the spring
semester. Attendance will be tracked and monitored during the spring
semester. Please note
all 10th graders who score proficient on DPT1 will still be
required to complete DPT2 during the test window.
- Weekly HQT Direct Instruction ~
12th Graders (fall and spring) & 10th graders
(in spring if applicable)
- Choose approved option and
attend all sessions. Approved options will be presented each
semester.
Please read these other
important documents as part of the CAHSEE Intensive Policy:
CAHSEE Intensive Options
CAHSEE Intensive Task Timeline
Why is CAHSEE Intensive
required and
what happens if a student misses their class or sessions?
- The CAHSEE Intensive program is
required as part of a student’s PLIP. (ESes please document
the CAHSEE Intensive in the student's Learning Record under CAHSEE PLIP).
Attendance Issues:
- Students who miss 2 classes or appointments and fail to
provide notice will be dropped from CWCS. Students must
contact their instructor / tutor if they become ill and
cannot attend a class or an appointment. (Most tutors require 24 hour
notice.)
- Attendance will be taken by the providers and a report
will be sent out weekly to all involved ESs and ES Advisors, so that
progress can be monitored and truant students can be dropped.
- Waiting list students who have not been moved into a
class from the waiting list after the 2nd week of instruction must either
obtain approval from the teacher to remain in the class or choose another
option.
- The weekly attendance sheet will be mailed directly to
ESes who have students in CAHSEE Intensive. It is the ES's responsibility
to review the weekly report and let the CAHSEE coordinator know if the
attendance is not correct and should be changed. The ES will in some cases
need to talk the tutor to verify attendance. The CAHSEE coordinator does
not determine if a truancy or drop should be administered, the ES must
consult the advisor on these issues. Email any updates tocahsee@connectingwaters.org. Please remember the attendance sheet
contains private information and cannot be shared with families.
Start and End Dates
- 10th and 12th grade
students enrolled in a CAHSEE class must begin attending class at the set
start date (two weeks after the start of each semester).
- 12th grade students
who have not enrolled in a class (or who are on a waiting list) must begin
tutoring sessions by the second week of the either the fall or spring
semester.
- All students must complete
their Diagnostic Tests by posted due dates.
- Students must attend their
class or tutoring sessions until they have taken their CAHSEE, or until
the class ends.
- Students enrolling in CWCS after any of the DPT
deadlines or Intensive start dates meeting the above criteria for CAHSEE
Intensive placement should complete DPT1 within 2 weeks of enrolling in
CWCS. ES should email sjohnson@connectingwaters.org students name, grade level, and ID# to receive a user
name and password for the student. Students should begin working with a
CAHSEE Intensive Tutor within 2 weeks of enrollment.
How is the CAHSEE
Intensive Plan structured?
- Each semester, various options
will be set up; all services will be provided by a Highly Qualified
Teacher or Tutor. Students choose which option works best for them.
How are Credits
assigned?
- Credits listed in the CAHSEE
Intensive Options can only be assigned if student has attended the entire
class and completed class assignments. Class assignments must be done in addition
to actual time spent in class and be documented in the monthly learning
record. CAHSEE Intensive Courses are assigned credits in Math Standards or
English Standards course titles, and are for Special Interest Elective
credits only. (If you have a student in 10th grade who is taking CAHSEE
Intensive, but has not yet passed Algebra, consult with your advisor for
credit assignments.)
- Credits may be assigned in the
following manner:
5 credits - semester long class
2- 5 tutoring (based on work assigned above and beyond test prep book
using15 hours per unit criteria)
1.5 credits - 6 week / 12th graders

This is the result the student receives at the
end of the assessment. This result gives details about which specific chapters
and lessons the student should review in their Measuring Up workbook based on
their test result.
The student should print the test results and
share it with his/her tutor and/or math instructor as a tool to guide their
instruction.
They can print the report at the end of their
test session. If they did not do this, they can log back into their account and
click on “results”. From there, click on the blue (hyperlinked) score. This
will bring up the complete Prescriptive Path. Use the print feature under your
web browser to print the results. Alternatively, the ES can log in as the
student to print or print to PDF file for the student using a PDF program such
as Primo.
After the student has completed the assessment,
ESs will log into the website as the student and enter the student’s answers
within 3 days of receiving the results. Upon completion of the assessment, you
will automatically be brought to the student’s results and Prescriptive Path.
This screen can be printed for the student’s tutor or printed to PDF for email.
Do not send the answer documents. The ES will
log in as their student and enter the student’s answers for them. This will
create the Prescriptive Path results to print for the student’s tutor and allow
the system to track the student’s data.
Email the CWCS office and a PDF version will be
emailed to you. Please have the students use the 2-page answer document
so you may recycle the paper version with other students.
No, you no longer need to score the paper
versions. The student’s answers will be entered into the data base (by the ES)
and automatically scored.
The essays are scored by an HQT designated by
CWCS Administration.
Email a scanned copy to sjohnson@connectingwaters.org. Make sure when you enter the student’s test
answers (for paper assessment) you indicate “student completed essay via paper”
under the essay portion #73. The HQT will enter a final score in the
system.
The eKnowledge requirement follows CWCS Truancy
Policy. Students are subject to truancies if they miss the deadline. Please
work with your advisor in these situations. However, in order to help guide
student instruction, the student must still complete the paper version of the
test.
Please review the Curriculum Policy under CAHSEE Intensive Plan for testing
requirements.
