REVISED 9/2009
CAHSEE
Intensive Plan
Who must participate:
- All
12th graders who have not passed either section of the CAHSEE
- All
10th graders who score Far Below
Basic or Below Basic on their 9th grade STAR test for math (general and algebra) or language
arts
11th graders who have not passed either section of the CAHSEE are not required to participate in an intensive course. They must have a CAHSEE PLIP, however, which could include tutoring, enrollment in courses and/or independent work using test prep materials such as Measuring Up or online test prep such as Study Island. The English Department recommends enrollment in a CAHSEE Prep course. The Math Department recommends a course or tutor for students who have not completed Algebra while student taking Algebra I or Geometry should be fine with Study Island or Measuring Up. CAHSEE Intensive (using the 10th grade plan) with tracked attendance is optional and will be available after all 10th and 12th graders have been accommodated.
What is the CAHSEE Intensive Plan:
- The
CAHSEE Intensive Plan is an intervention program set up to help all CWCS
students pass the CAHSEE so they can earn their diploma. Earning the
diploma is the first priority in a student's educational endeavors, and
therefore will take precedence over other elective activities when
planning the Instructional Funds budget. The CAHSEE Intensive programs can
be expensive, and the parent/student must keep this in mind when making
requests for other activities. Students who meet the above guidelines must
do the following:
- Choose a direct instruction HQT option that has been set
up and attend all sessions. Information on the direct instruction
HQT options will be presented each semester. Here are the 10th Grade CAHSEE Plan Options and 12th Grade CAHSEE Plan Options.
- All 10th grade intensive students are entered into Measuring Up epath by the curriculum director. All 10th grade CAHSEE Intensive students who choose tutoring for their CAHSEE Intensive Option must complete the Measuring Up Diagnostic Test (pretest).
- Here
are CAHSEE
Intensive Guidelines that the Tutor, ES and Student must follow.
Why is CAHSEE Intensive required and what happens if a
student misses their class or sessions?
- The
CAHSEE Intensive program is required as part of a student’s PLIP. (ESes
please document the CAHSEE Intensive in the student's Learning Record
under CAHSEE PLIP).
- The CAHSEE Intensive program is subject to the CWCS Truancy Policy and Procedure.
Attendance Issues:
- Students who miss 2 classes
or appointments and fail to provide notice will be dropped from
CWCS. Students must contact their instructor / tutor if they
become ill and can not attend a class or an appointment. (Most tutors
require 24 hour notice.)
- Attendance
will be taken by the providers and a report will be sent out weekly to all
involved ESs and ES Advisors, so that progress
can be monitored and truant students can be dropped.
- Waiting list students who
have not been moved into a class from the waiting list after the 2nd week
of instruction must either obtain approval from the teacher to remain in
the class or choose another option.
- The weekly attendance sheet
will be mailed directly to ESes who have students in CAHSEE Intensive. It
is the ES's responsibility to review the weekly
report and let the CAHSEE coordinator know if the attendance is not
correct and should be changed. The ES will in some cases need to talk the
tutor to verify attendance. The CAHSEE coordinator does not determine if a
truancy or drop should be administered, the ES must consult the advisor on
these issues. Email any updates to cahsee@connectingwaters.org.
Please remember the attendance sheet contains private information
and can not be shared with families.
Start and End Dates
- 10th and 12th
grade students enrolled in a CAHSEE class must begin attending class at
the set start date.
- 12th grade
students who have not enrolled in a class (or who are on a waiting list) must
begin tutoring sessions by the second week of the either the fall or
spring semester.
- 10th grade
students who have not enrolled in a class must begin tutoring sessions by
the first week of October.
- Students
must attend their class or tutoring sessions until they have taken their
CAHSEE, or until the class ends.
How is the CAHSEE Intensive Plan structured?
- Each
semester, various options will be set up; all services will be provided by
a Highly Qualified Teacher or Tutor. Students choose which option works
best for them.
How are Credits assigned?
- Credits listed in the CAHSEE
Intensive Options can only be assigned if student has attended the entire
class and completed class assignments. Class assignments must be done in
addition to actual time spent in class and be documented in the monthly
learning record. CAHSEE Intensive Courses are assigned credits in Math
Standards or English Standards course titles, and are for Special Interest
Elective credits only. (If you have a student in 10th grade who is taking
CAHSEE Intensive, but has not yet passed Algebra, consult with your
advisor for credit assignments.)
- Credits may be assigned in the following manner:
5 credits - semester long class
2- 5 tutoring (based on work assigned above and beyond test prep book using15 hours per unit criteria)
1.5 credits - 6 week / 12th graders
