Presenter biographies:

 

Dr. Bror Saxberg, Chief Learning Officer, previously served as vice president for Knowledge Testing Enterprises, where he was responsible for technology, testing, and operations. He was also the publisher and general manager for DK Multimedia, Inc., the North American multimedia arm of the educational and reference publisher Dorling Kindersley. Dr. Saxberg also worked with McKinsey & Company, where he advised clients on semiconductors, telecommunications, network systems, and business information services. Dr. Saxberg holds a M.A. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); an M.D. from Harvard Medical School; an M.A. in Mathematics from Oxford University; and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Mathematics (with honors) from the University of Washington.

 

John Holdren is Senior Vice-President of Content and Curriculum at K12 Inc., where he has co-authored The Glory of Greece (2006) and co-edited the two-volume world history texts, The Human Odyssey (2004-05), ten volumes in the Classics for Young Readers series, as well as the following titles: a collection called American Lives and Legends, and children’s retellings of Pollyanna, Robinson Crusoe, Don Quixote, Greek Myths, and The Iliad and the Odyssey (all published by K12 Inc.). He was previously Vice-President and Director of Research and Publications at the Core Knowledge Foundation, where, with E. D. Hirsch, Jr., he co-edited the Core Knowledge Series of resource books, What Your Kindergartner - Sixth Grader Needs to Know, published by Doubleday. He also edited Books to Build On: A Grade-by-Grade Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers (1996, Doubleday), and Rats, Bulls, and Flying Machines: A History of the Renaissance and Reformation (1999, Core Knowledge Foundation). Mr. Holdren has also served as Assistant Director of the Council for Basic Education in Washington, D.C., and has taught literature and writing at the University of Virginia and Harvard University, as well as high-school English at an independent school in Charlottesville.  He received his B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University (1976) and his M.A. in English from the University of Virginia (1979).

 

Kristen Kinney, Reading Specialist, has worked with K12’s Phonics and Language Arts programs since 2001. Previously, she taught kindergarten and first grade in the Rochester City School District (New York) and K–3 Special Education in Fairfax County Public Schools (Virginia). Ms. Kinney holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the State University of New York at Geneseo and a Master’s degree in Reading from Nazareth College. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at The George Washington University.

Darlene Lund holds a B.A.degree in Education from Central Michigan University. She is on her 16th year of teaching which includes eight years of teaching in a private school, one year substituting in public schools, and seven years of teaching her favorite students, her own children. She also screens individual students with learning issues and educates the parents on avenues that will help with their child's education. Understanding that we are never done learning, Darlene is an avid reader of spiritual and motivational books. She also enjoys teaching a ladies Sunday school class at her church. Darlene is on her 21st year of marriage to Phil. They have three children; Natalie age 14, Merrily age 10, and Elliott age 9. Elliott was adopted from the country of Ukraine and has beenl earning English successfully this year through K12's curriculum. She is using K12 for the third year in educating her children.

 

Suzanne W. Paynter and her husband homeschool their three children in Leesburg, VA. Her writing has appeared in several magazines and anthologies. She has worked as a professional ballet dancer, a dance teacher, a sales trainer, and a corporate scriptwriter; but no "job" has brought her as much joy as being a homeschool mom.

Lori Beverage is a life long New Englander. She has been married for 16 years and has four children ages 13, 12, 10, 8. Lori has homeschooled for 10 years. Her former life included 10 years as Public School Special Ed Teacher and Theatre Director. Lori holds a BS in Special Ed and Elementary Ed. from U. Maine-Farmington and a M.Ed. in Theatre from Emerson College. Lori has been using K12 since the company’s inception and has been a K12 Star since then, as well. She is currently employed as Field Marketing Coordinator for the K12. But most importantly…she’s a Wife and HSing Mom.

Heidi Higgins is the mother of six children, and has been married for 25 years.  The youngest three children have been schooled at home using K12 for four years.  Heidi has been a nationally recognized motivational speaker since she was 17 years old.  She is sought after as a political consultant for state and national campaigns.  She was educated at BYU.  Most recently Heidi helped establish a school using K12 curriculum for future winter Olympians.
