ESLR #5  Mathematical Thinkers who:

-Apply mathematical principles and operations to solve problems.

Practical ideas and suggestion to meet this goal:

-Business math techniques such as balancing a check book

-Calculate sport scores (probability)

-Carpentry

-Cooking (measurement), painting (area), shopping (using a budget, counting change)

-Create problem solving situations in everyday events – “When it is 1:30, let me know; we need to leave for piano at that time. How much time do we have to get ready?” “Use this $10 to find a birthday gift for your friend.”

-Cross Curriculum activities (writing out steps)

-Games with counting, money, shapes, problem solving, card games, dice for counting, Cash Flow Game.

-Great America Math Day

-Lawrence Hall Science: logic activities

-Life skills math: baking, cooking, measuring, sewing, construction

-Listen to Baroque Music

-Marine World Math and Science Day

-Math classes at learning centers

-Playing a musical instrument

-Shop at stores ( weighing  items, compare unit price etc…)

-Solve computational problems using M&Ms, licorice, Unifix blocks, number lines,

-Use Write Start Al Abacus

-Use white boards, etc. to allow students to use all modalities when tackling a problem – visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

-Use plenty of manipulative (French blocks)

- Use a calculator

- Use real money/coins; Practice making change on a cash register

- When using word problems, teach students to identify words giving clues about the operation(s) needed to solve the problem, having them highlight those words in the text.
