Revised 5/2002
Verification of Learning/ Credits Earned
The
ES is responsible to certify that appropriate learning has occurred during each
attendance period. Assigning attendance or Carnegie units to a high school
student without any evidence that learning has occurred does not meet the job
requirements set out in the ES Job Description. A situation in which the ES
never sees any work and the parent is just relating what the student is doing
would require clarification with the parent about expectations and requirements
for receiving units. However, not all learning is evidenced by paperwork and
the ES should use his/her professional judgment in the verification of learning
and assigning of units. Most problems in this area can be avoided by a thorough
discussion with the parent and student about if and/or how units will be
assigned BEFORE beginning a course.
Assigning
units can only occur when the ES verifies that the student has performed the
work required in order to earn the units. The ES, parent, and student must plan
activities to be accomplished in order for learning to be verified. A student
can pick a variety of activities to accomplish the learning, or the student may
pick one or two. The activities include but are not limited to the following:
