Maximum High School Units

Usually, high school students will take six, 5-unit courses equaling 30 units per semester. In very rare instances, there may be a reason for a student to take additional courses and earn more units, such as retaking a failed course while staying on-track to graduate. An ES must have the prior approval of their Advisor if a student is planning to earn more than 40 units in one semester. Without prior approval, the excess units may be denied. Your Learning Records must be complete to justify the excess units. If the student is attempting more than 40 units, the ES must collect all of the student's work in every subject area and make an appointment with his/her Advisor for evaluation of the body of work and possible approval of the units. The student's work must be kept by the ES for three years or until they enter the college of their choice. Granting more than 40 units is not automatic and an ES may not assure a student or parent that the student will be granted the units. Keep in mind that in order to earn 46.5 credits, a student must do school a solid eight hours a day for the whole semester
