CWCS Only: Assigning Grades to Courses with No Credits

All high school students must be attempting 25 credits a semester. All report cards should demonstrate at least this number of credits being attempted.

If a student is attempting 25, but does not earn ANY credits in one or more of the subject areas (or the parent requests no grades/credits in one of the areas), you must still complete a report card showing the attempted courses along with the other courses that have proper credits assigned. Put the correct course title as listed on the report card, and give a grade of “NC” for zero credits. Students must be assigned credits for any course work completed, even if only partially completed. But if a student was assigned a course, and did not complete any of the work, an “NC” would be appropriate. If a student has accrued any attendance at all, credits must be assigned accordingly. See sample below:

English 9A/ NC/ 0 credits

Algebra 2A/ B/ 3 credits

PE 1A/ A/ 5 credits

Earth Science 1A/ C/ 5 credits

Computer Skills 1A/ A/ 5 credits

If a student enrolls, and then is truant and subsequently dropped, a report card will still need to be created even though no attendance has been accrued, showing all courses assigned with “NC” and zero credits. See sample below:

English 9A/ NC/ 0 credits

Algebra 2A/ NC/ 0 credits

PE 1A/ NC/ 0 credits

Earth Science 1A/ NC/ 0 credits

Computer Skills 1A/ NC/ 0 credits

A situation might occur where a student enrolls, and then is truant and subsequently dropped, but has accrued some attendance, but not very much. A good rule of thumb is to calculate approximately 1.5 credits for every 5 school days of attendance. The attendance accrued should correspond with the work produced. See sample below where a student had completed only 9 days of work the first LR appointment, and then was dropped the next:

English 9A/ C/ 0 credits

Algebra 2A/ B/ 0.5 credits

PE 1A/ A/ 1 credit

Earth Science 1A/ C/ 0 credits

Computer Skills 1A/ A/ 1 credit
