REVISED 7/2010

Connecting Waters Truancy, Suspension, and Expulsion

The definition of "truancy" for this Charter School is defined in the policy below as a missed appointment/attendance period.  This is not the same definition of "truancy" as defined by California Education Code, nor are the practices and procedure below defined by California Education Code, but by this Charter School.

Charter School students, who are truant for two school appointments/attendance periods within the same school year, will be dismissed from the school.  The student will be invited to attend and participate in an Evaluation Hearing with the Administration to determine whether it is in the student’s best interest to be enrolled in an independent study program.

A school appointment may be defined as learning record meetings, classes, tutoring, any confirmed testing appointments, special education meetings, CAHSEE Intensive, and Contract Programs courses (including HQT Moodle/Elluminate courses) for grades K-12 in English, Math, Science, Social Science, VPA and Foreign Language.  A truant attendance period is defined on the Attendance Roll Sheet as 50% or less attendance during any consecutive school days on the student's calendar track (example: 7 truant school days over a 14 day period, 3 out of 5 days).  Full attendance is based on work in the 6 growth areas for a K – 8 students or a high school student attempting a minimum of 25 credits.  Please note that the truancies do not have to be consecutive.

Students may be suspended, dismissed, or expelled from this Charter School for non-compliance with the terms of the parent-student contract, or any material violation of any of the conditions, standards or procedures set forth in the Charter School charter, the Parent/Student handbook, the school’s policies and procedures, or for practices described in Education Code 48900.
