4th Grade Example History
Samantha is working through an in-depth
unit study on Lewis and Clark, and the Corps of Discovery. She has studied the geography of the route
they took; visited an on-line site which allows
students to interact with maps, study biographies/role/responsibilities of the
members of the Corp, view the variety of plants and animals seen along the route,
and play games. She also listened to a
read aloud "The Lewis and Clark Expedition". She has completed several coloring pages from
an informational coloring book while listening to the read aloud
selection. Samantha visited the
California History Days where she walked the streets of Old Sacramento with her
family observing dress, vehicles, displays, and food items from the Gold Rush
era. Assessment was
based on completed work as well as oral discussion with her parents.
4th Grade Example Science
This period, Samantha has been learning
about the concepts relating to electricity, earthquakes, and the Earth’s seven
layers. She observed a series of
lectures/experiments illustrating how batteries work, conductors, lights and
switches, how to build a switch, how to make a flashlight on your hat, and why
a light can pulse. She visited the San
Jose Tech Museum. Of special interest to
her was the exhibit on earthquakes. At
home, she created a simulator experiment to document earthquake destruction -
as well as finding ways to improve and reinforce buildings to withstand
quakes. She read the Usborne
book "What the Earth is made of".
Additionally, Samantha learned about the properties of various
rocks. She collected rock specimens for
experimentation. For assessment
Samantha was able to explain her simulator experiment and also show me her
different rock specimens she collected and what they specifically were called.

13. Student discussed and wrote down the
ten attributes of life and how they related to the nature of
living things. Student
demonstrated knowledge of biological research technology and measurement thru
x-ray, MRI, CAT scan, and ECT, in today’s world by completing unit review
questions 1 thru 15. Student also examined “The
chemistry of life” by first reviewing the Periodic Table of Elements, then
orally discussed how ionic bonding takes place, how matter and energy exist in
various forms, what are acids, bases and buffers, and then completed chapter 2
review test, questions 1 thru 11. Finally Student
reviewed molecules of life and successfully completed chapter three-review
test, questions 1 thru 20, as well as the unit review and the unit test as an

World
Studies Basics 1A (HQT SME Course)
Student wrote
a brief response describing the importance of history. She completed a “matching” exercise with
vocabulary words and important dates on the beginning of civilization. Then

English
11A (HQT SME Course)
Student
completed Unit 2 from PASS curriculum.
Pass
Curriculum 11 unit 2
Student
completed Unit 2 using Pass Curriculum.
In this unit student focused on reading knowledge and
understanding. Student and I discussed
the vocabulary terms for this unit. Student
previewed how to retain information by reviewing how to preview reading
materials. Student learned how to find a
topic sentence, thesis sentence, and subtopics involved in an essay. Student explained to me how previewing can
help readers discover the writer’s purpose, state whether it is an expository
or persuasive essay. Student read an
article called, Violent Video Games.
After reading the article student identified the subject, the main focus of the essay, the author feelings, how the
material was divided and used the illustrations to help explain the
meaning. Student located and underlined
the thesis statement. Student described
to me what each paragraph is describing.
Student learned how to highlight and circle key words and phrases. Student discussed with me how this is helpful
in retaining information.
Student
was evaluated through a series of questions and answers which
was given by me to assess the students understanding.
Student
read a short story called Shame. She
completed an activity where she located 10 different quotes and responded to
each quote. In her response she
discussed how she felt, whether she like or dislike the quote and made
personnel connections to each quote. She
was evaluated through a series of question and
answers.
Student
read the novel A Million Little Pieces
Student analyzed
a character in the book by describing in great detail
the character's thoughts, feeling, and personality traits. The student made personal
connections, and gave an oral presentation about the character. Student also discussed with
me the setting and main events in detail in written form.
Student
wrote a 3 page book report on Million Little
Pieces. This was used
by me to evaluate Student's understanding of the novel she read.
