AYP Annual Targets Increase This Year!
The federal law requires schools, districts, and the state as a whole to demonstrate adequate yearly progress (AYP) in English/language arts and math. To do this, student test results are matched to Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) based on proficiency levels. That is, the state sets annual targets for how many students must test proficient or above in order to make AYP. Each school and district must meet the AMOs in order to make AYP.

The 2006-07 school year marked the third consecutive year that the AMO targets
have remained the same. Beginning
with 2007-08, however, targets will increase yearly until they reach 100%
in 2013-14.

2006-07 AMO Targets: 2007-08 AMO Targets: 22.3% Proficient in ELA 33.4% Proficient in ELA 20.9% Proficient in Math 32.2% Proficient in Math |

The
"proficient" threshold on CAHSEE for NCLB purposes is 380 (higher
than the passing score of 350) for each of the English/language arts and math
components.
Preparing Students to Reach Proficient Level
It is
essential that ESes do the following for each student who will be testing:
·
Provide
appropriate instructional materials that focus on the assessed standards
·
Use
Suggested Learning Objectives and
Scantron results to identify areas of need; discuss these with parents, help
them find resources and locate items in the curriculum that address these
standards
·
Order
practice tests/test prep materials
(Buckle Down, etc.); Work prep material into regular daily assignments so they
are not overwhelmed right before testing
·
Especially
with younger students, review testing terminology, model
test-taking skills by “talking through” samples items
