Have you heard of CSF or NHS?
CWCS has had these two service oriented clubs for a few years. To qualify for CSF, students must have mostly A’s in a-g coursework. To qualify for NHS, students must attain a 3.0 GPA and have documentation of community service work. If you have a student that’s interested, please contact Mary Halter for an application. Application deadline is September 15, 2007.
Please refer to August newsletter for ACT/SAT test dates, scholarship information, and more!!!
A-G Courses:
Ø Who should take a-g College Prep Courses? A-g courses are required for students
who wish to attend a
o
Is your student ready for the rigor? You can use several indicators but in general
your student is ready for the challenge if he/she is reading at the 7th
grade level or higher.
o
If you have a student who is thinking about
returning to the regular high school to graduate…we’ve received feedback that
those students who return after taking a-g coursework have an easier time transitioning
back into the regular program. This is
because most regular high schools only offer college preparatory
coursework. Students who wish to return to their regular high school to graduate
should be advised to take a-g coursework, especially in English, Social Studies
and Math.
Ø Course descriptions and textbooks
o
Course descriptions and their textbooks are posted
on the school's web page at www.ieminc.org/handbook/highschool/Courseinfo/agcouretitle.htm
. Students must use approved texts (or
an updated version of the text) and course descriptions for a-g college prep
credit on the transcript. If you need
help finding textbook titles, please contact Mary Halter for assistance.
Ø
Submitting new textbooks and new courses
o
New courses for the 2007-08 year need to be
submitted to the Guidance Department by November 1, 2007. Please email your request to Mary Halter,
and be aware that you will be asked to follow a course outline template when
submitting a new course.

“How To” Guide for 2007-08
Here are some helpful hints for implementing a-g courses for your high school students.
General Guidelines:
1. Students must follow the course outline posted on our website at http://www.ieminc.org/handbook/highschool/Courseinfo/agcoursetitle.htm
2. Students must use an approved textbook from the course outline, preferably a CA Standards aligned textbook.
3. Students can use an updated edition of the textbook.
4. You can find the UC list of approved courses for CWCS at https://doorways.ucop.edu/list/
Course Specific hints:
Social Studies Students must follow the course outline.
English Students must follow the course outline and read at least three novels from the suggested reading list alongside the curriculum. The course must emphasize reading and expository writing.
Mathematics Students must follow the course outline, several online providers are listed on the Algebra course outline.
Lab Science Lab Science courses must include at least 20% laboratory
work. Recently we were informed by the
University of California that the lab portion of our a-g lab science courses
can not be completed in a home environment nor can “lab kits” sufficiently
provide students with the lab experience that UC is expecting from our
students. Please make sure your families
are informed that a-g Biology, a-g Chemistry, a-g Physics and a-g
Anatomy/Physiology must have an on site type/formal lab component. Options include taking the course at
community college, taking supplemental labs at our
Language Other than
English
Students must follow the course outline and should be given opportunities to apply dialogue.
Visual and Performing
Arts
Students must follow both the course outline and the California State Standards. The course must include some cultural and historical studies and should not simply be a performance experience.
College Prep Electives
Our approved electives include a-g Life Science, a-g Physical Science, a-g Earth Science, a-g Economics, a-g European History. The sciences in this category do not need a 20% lab component, however, lab experiences are recommended.
Upcoming Issues:
UC will be announcing a new policy for Independent Study Schools. We will have one year to comply with the new policy and we are expecting to have the policy in full implementation by Fall 2008.
