Kindergarten Retention

Policy:

California law provides that after a child has been lawfully admitted to Kindergarten (must turn 5 years old before December 3) and has attended for a year, the child shall be promoted to the first grade unless the school district and the child’s parent/guardian agree to having the child continue to attend kindergarten for not longer than one additional year. After that year, the child must progress to 1st grade.

Procedure:

In order for a student to repeat their kindergarten year one time, the state form and legal auditable document “Parental Agreement Form, Agreement for Pupil to Continue in Kindergarten” must be completed at the time the Fall Student Agreement is completed.  The box “ret?” must be checked on the first page of the ES Webfiles SA form. Submit both documents together to the school office.
