Positive Reasons for Scantron
Testing
A teacher
informs the student:
- "We are trying to find out what you don't
know, not so much what you do know; however, they only way I can
figure that out is if you try hard on the three tests.
- Why should you?
- Because I don't want to bore you, teaching
you stuff you already know.
- We have also found that we are teaching you 2.3
years worth of Grade Level Equivalency (GLE) every six months, so six
months from now try hard again and we won't re-teach you what you just learned.
You don't want to be bored do you? We don't want to waste your time on
stuff you already know.
- This test isn't like others, not only do we find
out what standards you are missing but we can give you a 2-page study
guide, give you a 2-question test to
see if you understood it yet; if not, then we can assign you some textbook
work on that particular standard to fill in that gap in your prior
education. Thus, you can strengthen yourself up across the board for all
subjects you take, can pass your CST and High School exit exams and even
college entrance exams, which are very similar to these to see how many
California standards you have learned.
- When you're done you don't have to wait for the
results for six months, you can see all the graphs on every sub strand of
math or punctuation you exactly need to learn. --Here see you've learned
37% of the standards for your grade thus far, pretty good, lets see with
the Study Guides if you can recall to mind how to do it more correctly
with a little review, and the other third we can hit the texts
together."
This pitch
has a positive effect on 3 of 5 who would normally just go through the motions
of taking a test lackadaisically. 1 of 5 is enthusiastic about it, and the
why-bother negative point of view on testing finally sees something in it for
them, anti-boredom. Part of their student contract is to test every six months,
but it works better if they know why they are taking this kind of test.
They are used to placement tests and this is for so much more.
