English Language Learner Strategies

 

Recommended Implementation Strategies

*LEP students should be placed under AESS contract

*LEP students must be placed with CLAD certified ES

*Evaluate data regarding identified ESL students to see how many and who passed CAHSEE

*Locate State ELD Standards printed in Spanish parent friendly versions

 

Suggestions for students:

*Enroll in classes at local learning center to develop vocabulary development

Ex.) Reader’s Theater, Writing Classes, Hands on Science, Arts & Crafts

 

*Find appropriate classes offered through the local community

 

*Set up peer tutoring partners/groups

Ex.) find somewhere in the community – parks, public library, etc.

 

*Order Textbooks/curriculum in home language;

Ex.) Steck/Vaughn; American Guidance Service; Houghton-Mifflin

 

*Use Jr. High/High School leveled published text, English for Students of Spanish/Spanish for Students of English for grammar development if appropriate

 

*Locate Published audio tapes titled ­Basic English Conversation at commercial book stores

 

*Contact California Department of Education Clearing House to provide any state adopted text books on audio tape

 

*Offer SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) curricular activities to promote oral language
