English Language Learner Strategies

 

Suggestions for Students:

*English Language Learning students should be placed under AESS contract

*Review State ELD Standards: http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/englangdevstnd.pdf

*Enroll in classes at local learning center to develop vocabulary development
Example: Reader’s Theater, Writing Classes, Hands on Science, Arts & Crafts

*Find appropriate classes offered through the local community

*Set up peer tutoring partners/groups
Example: Find somewhere in the community – parks, public library, etc.

*Order Textbooks/curriculum in home language;
Example: Steck/Vaughn; American Guidance Service; Houghton-Mifflin

*Contact California Department of Education Clearing House to provide any state adopted text books on audio tape: http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/pn/sm/

*Offer SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) curricular activities to promote oral language
• watch a news broadcast and orally tell your ES what happened
• listen to audio books and re-tell what happened
• life skills projects – find a local hospital, make a doctor appointment, open a checking/savings account
• set up times of the day with in the household where only English is used
• use SRA Reading Comprehension series
